Al's Bedliner install soon
I just ordered a DIY bedliner kit called Al's DIY Bed Liner. I've read a good bit of reviews about it from other sites stating that it is durable. I'll post some pictures of the process when I get it started after it comes in.

I have no before pictures but I'm sure you all know what a white bed looks like....
This stuff went on easily, but make sure you spray it evenly or you will run out before you're done.

I've sprayed on the the roll on kits before, but they are not too thick. This actually gives you the ability to spray on thicker. I might have to look into this more.

The texture is rubbery/nonskid type...well let me rephrase that, right now it has a rubbery feel but that maybe because it's newly sprayed. It has to set for 72 hours before you actually use it for anything "heavy duty." In 24 hours it can be used for normal purposes whatever that means. But an hour after it's sprayed it's dry to the touch. But I've walked on it with no deformation to the texture.
They claim it to be as durable or more durable than the professional sprayed bedliner. I looked at other forums extensively about this stuff before committing to buy it. Everyone that used it had rave reviews for it, so hopefully it performs as advertised.
Main thing is, after you mix it you then have 20 minutes to get it sprayed onto your truck or it thickens up to the point that it cannot be sprayed so prep everything and double check before you mix it .

Yes, an adequate air compressor....something that will hold at least 25 psi while spraying this stuff. Also an area away from other vehicles so overspray isn't an issue...so the apartment complex parking is a bad idea 
Basically, you have to sand the shine away from your bed then wipe it with an evaporating cleaner like alcohol. Then cover anything you don't want bedliner on then use the given primer and spray that, it comes in a spray bottle, let it sit for 15 minutes.....
Double check EVERYTHING before you mix the stuff....
Mix it up in the given container, pour into the hopper of the gun if you bought it...I'd suggest you buy it if you don't have a texture gun, then evenly spray everything. I almost ran out because I went to thick at the beginning.
But tools as you asked...
Compressor
Drill to mix the components
Masking Tape
Texture spray gun
Alcohol
Sander/Sandpaper
Paper or Plastic sheeting to cover the vehicle from overspray....
