I was not going to wait on ordering tires with the condition those old tires were in, otherwise, I would've ordered them.

Not necessarily, as I got a better deal at my local Discount Tire on my BFG's on this last go-around. They also fixed me up with a right-sized spare (a nearly-new Cooper AT3) for no cost, mounted and balanced. Factor in free rotations and re-balancing, and often any money saved buying online can be quickly offset. Yes, I can rotate them myself, but both times I had DT do them, a couple of tires took a bit more or less weight to spin true.

It pays to look at all the angles.

Oh, and I might consider letting WM change tires on a set of dinged-up factory rims, but they're not touching my Mustang's Steeda wheels or the new ones on the truck.

Agreed. I just got mine for less by buying them online through Wal-Mart, and then having the local store mount them. They shipped it to the store for free (Site-to-store). Got tires for my F150 and Escape, mounted, balanced, and road hazard warranty for 850 dollars out the door. Haven't put a pencil to the cost of each individually yet though.

I call local too and get quotes.
But theyve never beat low priced mail order for me
they are often equal to higher priced places, like someplace that has a presence in your state and must charge sales tax. many charge exhorbitant shipping too.

I always seem to find somewhere , often on ebay that sells free shipping, no sales tax, for a couple hundred less than I can get local. But it takes looking at lots of places. usually $70 rebate gas card or rebate visa card or something also going on. Sales tax alone can be $100 saved where i live. And walmart charges way less for mounting and balanceing, 13 per tire vs 30+ at some shops.

Walmarts done good on mounting for me. $65 out the door usually. mount, balance, new stems and valves. go early sat morning, no waiting. do some shopping while its happening for 45 min.

Same here, I'll never go local, the mark-up is horrible. I ordered AT3's (E's)from afar and saved 100 bucks and got free shipping last spring. I ordered my last set from a place called Discount Tire Direct. Couldn't beat the prices anywhere close, in fact I got a haha yah right from them around here lol.

Yup.

When getting a local quote last time i told the guy what i could order them for, to give him chance to match closer. I rather give local guy business if he not ripping me off. Even if it mean paying tax.

He said he didnt know how they coukd sell them at that price. It was less than he could get it for. I dont know that i believe it, but volume pricing may make big difference. Local guys dont really keep much on site, warehouses deliver to them during day which may add expense too.

I'd also like to point out that most places in Alaska flat out won't ship tires here or charge an arm and a leg for shipping, making most shops in town cheaper. Amazon won't ship here for example when buying tires... Wallmart doesn't sell the same quality of tire compared to the same tire when you buy else where, but they do ship from their site to the store up here. Goodyear is a great example of this and it's not worth the argument, you can read lots online about it. Whether it's true or not, I'm not gonna gamble that much money to find out.

But, I digress. I expect to pay upwards of 1000 dollars for a set of decent tires up here and with that comes with free mount, balance, and rotations for the life of the tire. They even threw in an alignment with what I paid, so the value of buying local through a good shop is there.

For all that I would definitely go with a shop.
