Thats exactly whats was happenin to me, you couldnt feel it or see any black but only when you accelerated u could her the ticking, changed the gaskets and you cant hear anything now. Usually the gaskets that come with the headers arent the best quality so they dont last long or are already a lil messed up straight outa the package. Copper gaskets last a really long time unlike the almost carboard material gaskets they sent me with my headers. When i took off(or scraped off i should say) my old gaskets it literally looked and felt like burnt pieces of cardboard

First get the header flanges planed. After that spend the money for Stage 8 Locking header bolts and a set of Motorcraft MLS steel gaskets. This was the only way I was able to get my OBX's to stop leaking.

Is planing the header really that critical? They have less than 500 miles on them I can't see them being warped.

The gaskets are only available at ford. You will need 4 of them. They are only sold in a package of 1. You may try rockauto.com. Yes it is crucial that the header flanges be flat. More than likely they have a slight warpage from the factory.

Its not critical if there new or relativly new. you shouldnt have to do that unless there old or have been abused in the past

Yeah I don't think I'm going to put another $150 into machining new headers. I called the local ford dealership in my area last night. They said they have the same problem with cheap gaskets not sealing. They have the nicer steel ones about $25 a piece and like the other guy said I'll need 4 of them. I'm going to go this route

Totally different vehicle but on my old Torino had a hot rod guy tell me to use red RTV only on the hedder. Throw a thick bead, let it sit for about 10 minutes and re-install. Worked perfect for me.
