99 F150 4.2L Oil temp light comes on gauges go crazy
Im sure this is on here somehwere, but I can't find anything like what my truck is doing. I apologize in advance.
It's a 1999 F150 XLT with the 4.2L V6 auto trans 179,000 miles.
This has happened twice now, I'll be driving on the highway and the oil temp light will come, tach and speedometer both drop to zero and max then fluctuate. Temp gauge goes to zero.
The first time it happened I took the cluster out and checked for broken solder joints. Nothing appeared to be wet under the dash or under the hood. Thank you for any info.

Too many irons!!!
Wow. You've gotten a lot of views and ZERO responses. My guess is that it isn't a very common issue.
I've seen this on other cars with voltage irregularities-spikes and such. So a battery check and alternator check wouldn't hurt. The other thing you may want to do just for fun is a gauge test.

No longer stuck in 2003
On another forum they suggest that a loose wire in the shift lever. I'm not sure if it will help or not.

I put a brand new battery in before winter and checked the alternator around the same time, which is when this first happened. Maybe October-November last year. I thought it was a voltage issue initially also. I can check again when I get home. I've tried the gauge test stuff but can never find any definite info on what the stuff means.

I imagine it is close to the same for our trucks. Maybe someone else can shed more light on it.
