98 transfer case is on crack
got a 98 f150 with electric shift 4x4. so heres some history on it. 2 years ago i pur 4:88s in the rear diff and front had 4:10s. so i didnt use my 4x4 for 2 years. i just recently had money to regear the front to 4:88. so im all happy and stuff right? i go to put my truck into 4x4 now and the transfer case shifts into 4H and 4L just fine but the vac lines to the front diff have been melted in half. so i fix the vac lines and try this again and still the front diff wont lock in. Now dont get ahead of me, this new thread im starting is not about my vac lines on my 4x4 it IS about my Trans case, trust, bear with here. sooooo i get a 12v test light and check my solonoids up on the fire wall. theres 2 wires on each solonoid. i stab into one wire on solo 1 and it lights up, stab into wire 2 on solo 1 and it dosent light up. just what i was expexting. THEN i check solo 2. wire 1 dosent light up, wire 2 Very dimly light up with the test light. so i figured there was somrthing screwy with my vac solonoids. By the way, the solonoids were only giving vacumme to 1 vac line to the diff no matter if i had it on 2wd 4H 4L. soooo at this point im like SCREW THIS VAC STUFF!!!!!! IV HAD IT!!.
Found this company on the internet that makes cable systems that by pass all that vac actuated junk called 4x4 posi lok cable system . I of course bought it.
Spent a couple hours today putting it on. i get it all on and adjusted, with the trucks front wheels off the ground i turned the passenger side wheel a lil to make sure it was DISengaged. tell my buddy to pull the cable switch from inside the truck and as he does i see it pull the lil arm on the diff to the ENgaged position. so i turn the wheel again and this time the front driveshaft spins. so im like COOL! IT WORKS! Its engages and dis engages great! so i dis engaged the front diff. (the whole time this is going on iv had the truck turned off)........... so i now jump in the truck and look over at my 4x4 switch and its sitting at 2WD position just where i had left it a week ago. i then put the keys in the ignition (This is where things really start getting weird and head scratching) and started the truck. i look at my dash and it says im in 4L and im like wtf i havent touched the switch and on top of that the switch is in the 2WD. so i flip the swith back and forth a few times with it in park, neutral, after taking it around the block, reverse, forward. NOTHING would make the dash light that says 4L go off. i notice it dosent feel like 4L either so i have a friend look at the front driveshaft while i drive it forward to see if there truely is power going to the front wheels. and well there wasnt. So the truck looks like its in 2wd but is saying its in 4x4 and i didnt do anything to provoke that. and the trans case wont shift at all. even though it was shifting fine a week prior. HELP ME!!!! IM Tired of this!!! lol What is wrong! why wont it shift and why is it RANDOMLY telling me im in 4x4 when theres only power to the rear wheel. seriously WTF oh and i need to add i put a high output alternator on today also. idk if that really matters
