98 F150 4.6 rebuld

Hello to all, I have 98 f150 4.6 (romeo) with about 142k miles, I'm the second owner of this truck and have had it sense 106k miles and have always done regular maintenance as it should be done. I have a head gasket leak and will be pulling the motor for a rebuild, and adding PI heads. I know this will raise the compression and I will have to have a tune and run 93 octane gas. I know these trucks are heavy and the 4.6 is not a powerhouse, any suggestions to help make more power? would cams do any good? going to try to fit electric fans into my budget as well. This is a daily driver and I rarely pull anything. Any tips or suggestions for this build would be appreciated.

Where are you at in Ohio?

Your correct in the fact that the 4.6 isn't a powerhouse of a motor so if your considering cams go with something like a RV cam grind. A set of Pacesetter short tube headers
they have a good 1/2" thick flange and 1 5/8" tubes. Everything will bolt up. Then do a Gotts mod for the intake. There's a link in the how-to section that'll explain how to do that.
Now all this is for torque on the lower end. And if your running 16" tires with a 3.55 rearend, it should serve you well.
Now higher compression and a higher octane means more heat. I'd suggest a new 2 row radiator with a H/D or severe duty rated fan clutch. That should spin the fan between 70-90% of
shaft speed. And back flush the heater core. The concern here is there's a restrictor in the hose from the water pump to the heater core that may have a buildup of crud. Do this while the engine is out.
As far as electric fans go, if your not towing on a regular basis it'll be a waste of money.

Shorties proved zero gain on the dyno, waste of time,- if your lookin for performance anyway . Pacesetter LT's with PI swap nets 30hp 35 torq on the dyno. Your going to tune anyway right, so.... Yea excellent numbers when worked into a PI swap. Puts the 5fours at 260 RWHP. The 4six will be close to it all said and done.

@River1 im in Gallipolis, right on the river about 2hours south of Columbus. I think an Efan would definitely free up some lost HP. @Jbrew will longtubes work on a 4x4, is there any clearance issues? Or will I even have to worry about that sense the engine is coming out?

Do you have your PI heads and intake?

BTW, I've taken 23 to 35 to get to 77 many times.

Fatcat740 01-07-2020 10:24 PM

@River1 I have the heads, but need an intake.

I'm just north of Toledo and I have one along with some of the harness. It's yours if you want it. Could have given you the heads also.
