Default 98 4r70w into 2002?

Hoping someone with experience can chime in. Want to know if a 98 has the exact same trans as an 02. Like are all the connectors the same etc. Both vehicles are 4x4. Any implications with flex plates or tq converter? If memory serves right the 4.6 and 5.4 converters are different. Hoping it's a plug n play operation.

Have the oppurtuniry to get a truck with a junked motor and plan to rebuild the motor and throw the trans in my current truck from the donor. Might move the lightning setup to the "junk" truck because I keep on braking trans and need something dependable. Seems to all make sense.

I think this will all work but sanity check appreciated .

98 will have the speed sensor in the tail shaft. The 02 will not be made for that. I don't believe connectors will be the same though.

Pretty sure it won't because of the electrical. I don't know if you can manipulate the harness, tuning but you can run a separate controller. Good thing you asked because I'm pretty sure almost positive it's not plug and play with either 4r70w or E40D/4R100 direct swaps. Seems like Ford screwed with it's transmission often before and after the transmission connector. So yea, hopefully someone can be more definitive than that. I know 97/98 150's are quite different from the rest in certain areas.

This is no different than the gentleman with the 99 that wanted to use the 98 transmission. It doesn't work well, or at all, depending on who does the install. lol

With all the 99-03's out there, you wouldn't think that there were that many 98's sitting around with transmission for use. Strange to me, since there are so many 99-03's.

Crap this is both good and bad. Saved me from sinking money into another truck though for sure. So thanks for the warnings.

So plot thickens. In my lentech manual it states 98 has same pinout as 02. It does definitely show 97 as having different pinout so that is for sure correct and requires repin at minimum.

Do we know if 98 uses oss or vss sensor for shifting? If sensors are the same I would think I'm good.

Didn't see this till now. So in short the argument that I cant swap over based on these threads are based on these two issues:

1) "97&98 uses gear in tail shaft for speedo & 99+ doesnt have that"
2) "97&98 use VSS and 99+ uses OSS"

I can see how going from VSS to OSS or vise versa would be a headache and serious obstacle. Gotya there. BUT FSM shows the 98 with a OSS not VSS and there is no mention of a speedo gear in the diagram as the other posts claimed. Ill post that diagram up momentarily. So in other words FSM and info in here is conflicting.
