E40D then. Ok, now you need to check the wiring to the plug at the back of the transmission (left side before the t/case). The speedo work thru that VSS sensor.

I had a similar problem, and it wasn't either sensor. The damn cluster quit working on the speedometer. The odometer kept working only. They (speedometer and odometer) work together but NOT on the same link. The odometer works off a small motor that drives the head. The plastic gears crack over time, and sometimes will break with a hard hit. Just something extra to check. I ended up just getting a new cluster and saying to hell with the repairing. If you need some cluster pieces, have 3 torn down.

You said you changed it with a used one, so I was just giving the general info in case someone else wanted to know where it is. It is on the transmission tail. The harness you changed is to the one on the axle. I'm talking about the one to the vehicle speed sensor. On the 97-98 w/E40D, it actually uses the transmission one. The rear becomes ABS only. This is why I asked about which transmission you had. On the 4R70W, the rear is both ABS and speed.

When you changed the VSS, the one on the trans with the used one, did you put your gear on it, or did you just swap the units complete? I'm asking so that we can eliminate all the ways it might be.

What year did the harness come out of you used? On the VSS, if the gears are the same color, no problem, but if they are different colored, you need to pull it back out and replace it with the correct gear. this matches to the tire and rear end codes, to keep the speedometer right. We don't have the option, in 97-98, that 99 and up have, in being able to adjust speedometer speed to tires and rear axle thru the OBDII port with a tuner.

Im gonna have to look at the gears tomorrow as today it rained all day and dont exactly want to get wet rn. And i have a 98 ford f150 4x4 parts truck was my first truck. Spark plug flew out of engine and planned ahead and got a truck about same year enough to use parts. And how do you go about switching the gears. Do they just slip off?

The gear is attached with a simple black metal slide on retainer clip. You just slide it off, and change the gear, replace the retainer.
