Default 97 4.6 rough idle Never Dies

I have a 97 extended cab 4.6 2wd. Cold start the truck runs fine, but once idle rpms come back down it lugs like crazy. It will idle at normal rpm for about 3 seconds then drop a couple hundred rpm then go back. I could put a timer to it and it would never change. However it will never die, just the lugging. Truck will also do it at red light when in drive. I thought maybe idle air controller valve but it never dies just lugs.

Currently dealing with egr issue right now too. Backfiring under load at about 50 mph. Any advice from the experts would be appreciated.

EGR will do what you are experiencing. I assume you have a CEL on?

Yup. Although my bulb is apparently out. I just took it in to get scanned on a hunch and it through egr and oxygen sensor codes. Do you think seafoam would fix or a whole new valve?

No, Seafoam won't fix that. There are 3 major components to the EGR system. You really need to have the exact code to make sure you are replacing, or cleaning the right parts. Do you know the code(s)?

I will need to go back to O'reilly and get it. I will update when I have the specific code. Thank you for your patience with the newb.

No problem. I just hate to see you waste money and replace the wrong piece. When mine acted like yours is, it was the modulator that was bad rather than the EGR valve itself. There is also a DPFE switch that could also cause issues like this.

There's a good change that your EGR ports are plugged up, and that will indeed cause your idling issues. I will try and find a video or some pics to illustrate
