Default '97-03 electric fans modification

Hey y'all I just joined the forums the other day. Has anybody ever done a electric fan conversation? Its just something I'd like to do if you guys have any tips or a thread y'all can point me to that would help to. I have a 1998 f150 with the 5.4 sohc wanting to free up some space under the hood plus if it'll give better cooling that would be cool to. (not that my truck over heats or anything) Thanks for your time for reading and your help.

Use the Search, there are tons of threads on Electric fan conversions. I used Ford dual fans from the newer Gen F150's with a Painless Wiring kit. I like the Painless kit, not only does it have auto off when the A/C is turned on but it also turns the fans off when I hit a certain MPH I choose.

If I were to do it again, I would use Flex-a-lite fans for less Amp drain. The Ford Fans suck up a huge amount even with the Painless soft start. My Harness was $250, the Fans were about the same I think and the Ford wire connectors were another $30.

Make sure you have a good Alternator that can handle the fans.

Thanks for your tips and input. Did you upgrade your alternator to aftermarket or bought a new one from a auto part store? Sorry I just want to do it right the first time.

The summer prior to the Fan install my factory Alternator died and I just made sure I bought the Highest factory amp alternator offered at autozone. I guess there were a few options from the factory based on Trim levels, since I wasn't for sure what I had, i bought the highest they offered which I think was 110amp vs. the 80amp.

If I would have went with the Flex-a-lite fans I doubt I'd ever be able to tell they were attached since they run so much more efficient. Now when they turn on, if I have all my lights and HVAC running when the fans kick on I can see the RMP's drop when I'm idling.

Although people do this mod on the cheap all the time, It's not something I'd do cheaply or with a home built relay kit unless Simple is what you really need. ..like for a trail rig or something.

I also plan on upgrading to the Flex-a-lite fans. The Ford fans are absolute Tanks but I'd rather be on the efficient side than on the million mile range like the Ford fans are.

I have a Mark VII fan I am going to be putting on mine. I am using a Volvo relay with a BMW sensor/switch. I have the same setup in my Mustang, but I used a Taurus fan in that. It works great.

I am not even 100 dollars into mine.... maybe not even 80. If you're interested, here's a link to my mod below.

I'm running the flex a lite kit on mine. It awesome. Just recently had to replace a fan motor. Had it 5+ years. It is completely worth the money as its a variable setup. The fan speed changes based on how you set the control.

They must've come a long way. I had this POS Black Magic fan on my Mustang, and it was horrible. I eventually went back to the factory fan... and now the Taurus.
