Default 4x4 turning on and off rapidly and by itself

2000 f150 4x4 5.4l. The 4x4 light on dash as well as the clicking sound the switch makes is turning on and off very rapidly. This only happens when i put it in a gear. In park or neutral it doesn't do anything. 4x4 switch is off when this happens. If i turn the switch on it doesnt happen 4x4 just stays on. After shutting truck off and starting it again later it did it again in reverse but this time when i went to drive it stopped and only flashed maybe once. When it does the rapid on off my windows wont row down fast the start pause almost with the flash. Also my wipers seem to have a pause in them at the bottom. If i put it in park or neutral to make the 4x4 stop turning off and on the windows and wipers work fine.. any ideas of what it could be?
Thanks

I'm assuming you have the electronic transfer case and not the manual lever?

If thats the case I'm guessing either the shift motor or the sensor in it is shot, and for whatever reason its trying to shift the transfer case for you.

I would also check the switch itself, it may be broken inside and causing intermittent contact.

I suspect the shift motor. I've replaced quite a few of them, even on Rangers. Check to see if it appears "swollen". Water tends to get inside them. It's even more of a problem here in Canada with cold temps. Water gets in and freezes.

I vote for the dash switch shorting intermittenly. That is where the power is controlled, and when in 2wd, can't engage the shift motor. So if it is engaging, it must be coming from there. Maybe the ground from the switch, causing a feedback and engaging the motor. JMO
