Default 4x4 not working

Hey there. Well i am having problems with my 4x4 on my 97 4.6. She has a electronic 4x4 switch as well. I tried to engage the 4x4 and the front wont lock in. i jumped underneath the truck to see if the front drive shaft is lock in when engaged and it is. I checked the front differential fluid and that is full as well. So i am really clueless on what could be wrong with it as well. so if any one could i would appreciate it very much.

Check to see if the actuator is moving the shift fork. If it doesn't then check for vacuum at the lines and if you have vacuum then your actuator is probably shot. Sometimes they won't move all the way and that just requires some lube. If it does move and still won't engage then your shift fork is broke. So if everything is working up to the axle but it still won't go into 4 then it's the shift fork.

I have a similar problem. Its electronic and it will go in and out of 4H no problem but 4L is a different story..... it goes in fine but wont ever seem to come out. After many attempts if finally goes back to 2WD or 4H. Whats the prob? Same as above kinda?

The truck has to be in neutral to shift in and out if 4L and if you do that and it still doesn't come out of 4L then it would seem to do with the transfer case motor I would think but I have no experience with that.

Sounds good! I had the shift fork go out in mine in December and was lucky the mechanic only charged me an hour of labor plus parts, the shift fork assembly is about $210 plus new transfer case oil. The mechanic was able to just remove the passenger half of the axle to change it out instead of dropping the whole axle which is how I hear most people doing it.
