I was in the woods when I notice it wasn't working and the rear tires spun and not the the front . Can I jack it up all the way around to see if the front are pulling . Or do you have about her idea how to check .

You can jack all four off the ground and check for sure. Or just the front and engage. If the front wheels wont spin freely than its engaged.

Ok that's what I did . They spun free then engaged 4x4 then one spun one way and the other spun backwards . That sound rite . I figured it would be locked myself and not spin at all . But he'll I don't no

If they spun opposite the front is engaged. Could be intermittent motor or dirty connection to motor since it lives in a hostile environment.
