Default 4x4 engage issue

Ok jacked up the truck and engage 4x4 . I can sping the tire ( either one ) around and watch the front drive shaft spin . Problem is no 4x4 . I don't hear a clink like it went in at the transfer case . You think the motor at the case could be bad ? Should I be able to lay under it and get some to engage it and hear it move ? I fell pretty confident the front is working fine I think it's at the transfer case . Thanks for any help !

And if your lights in dash don't light those are the only two options I can think off.

Ok , I jacked the front back up and engaged the 4x4 I felt and herd the motor on the transfer case engage . The front drive shaft is locked now . Now when I rotate the front tire the other one rotates the other way . Limited slip front end I'm assuming . So it should be working rite ?

I'm thinking sometime the motor work and sometimes not . What do you all think ? I don't have a problem buying the motor but I hate to buy it if I don't need it .
