I had the same thing happen with my '00 Lariat a couple years ago. It was the vac. actuator on the front diff. You can check the vac actuators on the firewall yourself (if they are there on the '01) with a vacuum guage to narrow the problem down. If the vac levels there are correct (one goes high when engaging, then the other goes high when disengaging), it's probably the diff mechanism. Apaprently an easy fix, but I took it to a mechanic just to make sure it was done right.

when you engage 4x4 try rotating ur front drive shaft, when in 2high it spins freely and when its in 4x4 it shouldnt(idea, not sure if it works). and if it spins freely i believe it is you trasfercase motor.

Same prob two months ago. Really easy fix. There should be a blue and a pink Vacume line on the firewall. First check to see if there leaking. Second follow them down to the front diff and shoot the hell out of the slider with some pb blaster. There's three bolts that hold up a plastic shield. Much easier if you remove the shield.

So are we talking about the vacuum lines coming off the pumps or the pumps going out? My 4WD will not in gauge. In fact almost go stuck with my camper trailer the other day. If the vacuum lines are the easy check I will look there, if not I will look into transfer case motor not responding.

Had this problem last winter, solved by a member on F150 Forum who recoerded his problem. If your FWD lights don't come on the dash when you engage the shifter, look towards the oil pressure switch on the transfer case. It will stop the Transfer Case if oil is low in case. In my case it was corroded and replacement was 38.00 dollars. A far cry from a dealership. Switch is similar to a neutral start switch.

I think you mean stealership lol, they wanted $150 to take my backseat out. Sorry to get offtopic but stealerships p*** me off. Just another reason why I love this forum, it really is awesome for the DIYers.
