I own a 2K Expedition XLT 4X4 with the 4.6L. I did a little bit to it...K&N, cutaway intake box and constant-radius air tube, underdrive pullies, clutch fan delete and replace with dual electric, Gibson cat-back and a Superchips tune. The tranny got a performance valve body. Synthetic fluids all around. Pulled a 6.3K 6x14 TA cargo trailer for more than a decade and dozens of thousands of miles, and never felt a lack of power. Sure, I may have liked to have more, but that's different from NEEDING more. Just got back from a 15-mile freeway blast and it's as solid as ever at 207,730 on the clock.

That is similar to my experience. I have a 2000 F-150 TRITON also w/4.6. My truck has 201,000 miles and it runs as well now as any vehicle I have owned and I have owned a Lot of cars and trucks(Foreign and Domestic).

If the 5.4 Is actually Better, I certainly would be amazed.

I think it is mainly a difference of a few "Ponies"

It has a lot more low end torque and just pulls better.

'97-'00 4.6:
220 hp @ 4,750 rpm
265 lb-ft @ 4,000 rpm

'97-'98 5.4
235 hp @ 4,250 rpm
335 lb-ft @ 3,000 rpm

the 5.4 has 15 more HP 500 rpm lower, 70 more torque 1000 rpm's lower

'01-'03 4.6
231 hp @ 4,750 rpm
293 lb-ft @ 3,500 rpm

'99-'03 5.4
260 hp @ 4,500 rpm
350 lb-ft @ 2,500 rpm

The 5.4 has 29 more HP 250 rpm lower, 57 more torque 1000 rpm's lower.

Having 350 ft/lbs of torque at only 2500 rpms makes the 5.4 a much better towing truck.

Definitely better at towing but deosn't mean the 4.6 can't tow.

I tow a 16.5 ft fiberglass boat all the time with mine and I see no lack of power.

Does the trick for me with less fuel consumed

Are you sure you want Horsepower instead of torque?
5.4 V8 engine don't have low end, its from the torque converter. The problem is it overheats & wear too fast depending how you step on the throttle. Bigger is not always better. It's proven by 9th Generation 4.9 Straight-6 engine that has more low end torque compaired to all V8 engines.
265 ft-lbs @ 2,000 RPM.

Ford short explanation of torque.
