Default coil packs!!!!

Hi Calvin,
Well in my search for a cure, I talked to a buddy that works at a Ford dealership, he told me to change the coils, they can get weak after lots of miles, seeing as I have 220,000, what the hell, I'll try it. Ford wants alot of money for these items, so a freind I know has a wrecking yard and I bought a set of them from him off a vehicle that had 12,000 miles on it. Well low and behold the miss went away. I checked all the old coil pack boots for signs of electrical leakage, didn't see anything. Anyway I'm back rolling down the road with no miss. I'm going to have to make a tester for these coilpacks. You know in the old days all you had to do was open the hood on a dark night and you could see the leakage on an ignition system, and a set of wires, cap rotor cost less that one of those coilpacks.

Good luck Calvin

Default 4.6 with a miss

that sounds just like my '99 f150...runs ok when cold, but when it gets to operating temp, it has a few misses..then at times it runs ok, but has a distinct feel that it is sick as no power, at least not like it did.

I've been told it was torque converter shudder, fouled plugs, bad wires and a few other things...so at 114,000...it almost has to be the coil packs....glad I took time to find this site....thanks guys..

I'm new here at this site, but I just went through this. After going to auto zone about six times, I finally believed them. They said spark plug # 5 was a misfire. First I changed the coils with some used ones, no change. Changed the plugs, no change. The wires where about 5 months old(motorcraft)so I thought they was not the problem. After a long hassle with all this I changed the wires. Runs great now. One wire was bad from the beginning, and just got worst from time to time.

The key to my problem was it never showed a code. Your misfire should have thrown one....and it must have if they said it was #5.

The code was there, just found it very hard to believe that a new motorcraft spark plug wire was bad, It made a believer out of me,

ok, now what? I finally changed the coil packs..thank god i had another '99 4.6 to take them from..well, the miss is just as bad? maybe worse. the coil packs were off another 4.6 that ran well. so, any ideas? plugs? wires? how about throttle position sensor? after all the above, still no codes....just seems it has a bad plug or wire at times. filter changed and fuel pump is good. fuel regulator?
And no matter what i do, it will NOT throw a code..that is the biggest problem...

I too have a slight miss in my engine. I have the 4.2 how-ever. I have changed 3 coil packs over the last 10 m years. The eng runs good 99% of the time. Every now and then I get a slight miss. Not enough to throw a code. I have changed plugs, wires etc. When the coil went it threw a code. It sounds like you have a similar problem.

I can honestly say this, after swapping the coil paks, new wires(after market packard's 8.5mm) and autolite base platniums, this old truck runs like a new one......it seems the plugs were the culprit along with the wires...no codes, no nutin.....mechanic charged me a very reasonable fee to change all out...
so take heed.....plugs and wires can also not throw codes if bad....i had 115,000 on the beast and still no codes..no matter what i tried...just a heavy miss at a hard acceleration...and a funky starting...like it wasn't getting enough spark...case is solved....plugs, wires and maybe coil paks....but i would go the plugs and wires first....

Whenever I change my plugs and wires I do NOT buy the cheap ones they always ended up being bad. So I always went with the top of the line wires and good platnum plugs -seem to last longer also
