Most 4.6 trucks came with 220 HP stock, which is truely about 180-190 actual horsepower to the wheels.
The 5.4 trucks came with 260HP which is actually 210-220 wheel horse power.
Hands down the 5.4 is the stronger engine. More displacement means more power, period. The 5.4 will respond better to modifications and gain more power simply because it has more displacement.
In my opinion the 4.6 is great for cars, but not enough to push a heavy truck or haul a trailer. The 5.4 is better for torque and horsepower.

I've read in several previous posts (in other threads) that my 1997 F150 4x4 5.4 had 235hp when brand new. I'll say it is a torqy motor which I love. I can't imagine mine still has 235hp now that I'm approaching 150k miles. I like having the 5.4 though. It's nice having the biggest engine offered (At the time) and it makes boat hauling SO much easier!

well the chart proves it does have 260hp. and the guy who started this thread has 255hp in his 4.6 and i will have mine dyno this week.. my buddy has the same year f150 i have and his is not a triton. just says f150?

thats why on the chart it shows 2 different hps i guessing one is for the standard v8 and the other is for the Triton v8.. i could be wrong but makes perfect sense to me. like i said my buddy has the same truck as me mine says triton his says v8?

Im sorry to say man that chart is wrong i dont know who found it but ford never had 2 different 4.6's and 5.4's that they put in these trucks. Yes the power was upgraded in both after the 98 model year in both motors, 'but they have always been triton v8's.....
