Honestly the only difference power wise between my 97 and my 00 that I noticed was highway when I was going up a hill and it down shifted the 5.4 threw me back in the seat when the 4.6 didn't oh and just stopping on it I could tell lol but I didn't tow so Idk with that otherwise your average daily drive they're pretty equal to me

My dad tows our boat and a 16 or 18' car hauler loaded with whatever random **** we have to move pretty good with his. Never thrown a real heavy load at it though,we just pick up the powerstroke when we have big stuff to haul

Some of the 04-07 5.4 had issues with cam phasers and two piece spark plugs. Other than that they are rock solid engines. You may find a few more complaints about them online but there is a lot more 5.4s out there than 4.6s.

To add to your post, any issues with a 97-03 5.4 has been fixed in all crate engines.

Now I'm more confused. Lol! I'm gonna check with local shop that specializes in fords. Total Performance has been in many mags for his mustang motors, his name is John Vermeersch. I'm sure he has swapped 4.6 to 5.4
