4.2 camshaft sensor issue
 

C.E.L. is on, came back reading camshaft sensor, pulled off old one to replace it and found metal shavings in a destroyed camshaft sensor. Does anybody know what could have caused this and how it can be fixed??

Excellent write up, perhaps the actual sensor came loose from its housing and just got chewed up by the rotating tang. Make sure this tang or the part that passes between the magnet and its other pole isn't damaged. Remember to follow instructions with alignemnt tool if the base unit called the cam synchroniser is to be replaced.

The camshaft synchronizer is bad. Very common failure. The bushings or bearings in the housing are worn out and caused excessive play in the shaft.
I would replace the synchronizer and sensor assembly to be on the safe side.

The synchronizer is kinda pricy, $160.00. Had removed one on wifes 96 Explorer 5.0 for a chirping noise. After disassembly and cleaning was able to save and reuse. Check it closely for any wear, if its worn it should be obvious. Tool used was $35.00, just to add to the repair cost, unless you can borrow it.

Can someone please tell me how to remove & replace the synchronizer? I am trying to repair my 2003 F150 and could sure use some help. Thank you!

Hi there Buddy, am trying to remember back, its been 2+ years since I worked on mine. Seems to me, the sensor is replaceabled without removing the whole housing and thus the timing tool isn't required. Naturally if you rotate the whole housing, the tool is required. Hopefully someone else will chime in and offer assistance.

What mm did you use to remove those bolts, it's having me bite my tongue right now lol

5.5mm, 7/32 works as well. Just came in from changing mine.
