Could you swap in a 3.8L or 5.0L transmission, yes!
Can you swap in a 4.6L or 5.4L transmission, no!

"As far as a 4.6 or a 5.4 bolting up to the 4.2 trans.... not happining unless its from a 91-93 Lincoln town car. they had the windsor pattern on the SOHC 2 valve early 4.6's."
What if the Engine is Romeo? Are F150's (98-03) 2 Valve 4.6 Engine different from 4.6 installed in Expedition and E150?

97-03 4.6 and 5.4 have the exact same bolt pattern and matching bolt patter. The expedition and e150 with 5.4's all had the 4r100. All 4.6 has 4r70 aode. Both 4r100 and 4r70 can be bolted to 4.6 5.4 and even the 6.8
