Default 3.55 to 4.10

Ok I would like to hear from the people with real world experience doing this. I have a 2002 crew cab 2wd with the 4.6 and 3.55 gears. I plan on doing quit a bit of towing with it so I was thinking of changing the gear to 4.10 and I would like to hear from the folks who have done this with the same basic set up and how it helped or did not help enough to do it. By the way I will be towing my travel trailer at about 6000 pounds. I also am keeping my stock tire size. Also how much of a fuel economy change did you get by doing this. This is not my every day driver so I am not overly concerned about the fuel economy unless it will be a drastic change.

No real need to change gears unless your really sluggish but these trucks 4.6 and 5.4 have what it takes to tow that trailer no problem I bumped it up to 3.73 a while back and saw more of an improvement when towing my boat and trailers but nothing to brag about I got pretty spectacular gas mileage when I took a trip to Florida a little ways back averaging about 15mpg towing 10k lbs roughly but the more I drive my truck I feel as if that was a fluke or some bad math but now I drive my truck 60-80 miles a day and use about an eighth of a tank of gas a day. I also drive 60-65 mph and have a few mods done to help me out but nothing to serious. I am driving my 03 scab 4x4 with basically stock tires 265/70/16 as well so no real rolling resistance out of the ordinary. Regearing is not a bad idea especially if the trailer is more of an everyday thing not just once In a blue moon like my boat.

I would re gear I would jump to 4.10 though without a doubt most people on this forum who have done it see a significant change but have to get there speedo recalibrated as the only real negative I see For most of my larger towing days and needs I grab my duramax or power stroke and they pull whatever I have with ease and both are bone stock.

If you need a nice diesel you can grab my Chevy for cheap it's an 07 reg cab with 12k on it it really just sits and I bought it for landscaping but the guys I work with can't be trusted for more than 10 seconds with something new or nice without scratching crashing or dirtying it up.

I had a fleet of fords starting with my 88 half ton then a 92 then a 97 98 99 01 03 08 11 all half tons all rear geared except the 11 and 08

I also got a 77 3/4 ton that I'm fixing up

The Chevys throwing my mojo off

Of the12 I have 6 left

Chevy
Powerstroke
77
88
03
08

Traded the 11 for 08 crv 2 bikes and an ATV
The 08 is the wifes

I have switched to 4.10's. I have a 4wd on 33's. I saw a increase in the city mpg's unloaded, but saw a slight decrease on the hwy unloaded. I found it easier to tow, and got a little better mileage while towing. Its definitely become a different truck.

I highly recommend it, they really wake up our 4.6's. I have a '97 4.6 2wd with ford racing 4.10 gears rolling on 305/40r22(basically stock diameter but the same weight as stock rims w/35" tires) wheels and i absolutly love them. Gave me back all the torque i lost with my 22's plus a bunch extra, and also gained a couple mpg too. I also have a cai, shorty headers, 3" exhaust and hypertech programmer and they all really compliment each other well making my truck a BEAST, but you should def buy some. Out of all my mods ive done the regearing is the one i felt the most gain with.
