2wd vs 4x4?

I just recently got to thinking...do I really need a 4x4 truck? I've been looking at 4x4's but now I'm not sure if a 4x4 is the way to go or if a 2wd will suit my purposes just fine.
I live in a rural area where the roads do not always get plowed very well in the winter. That being said, I tend to minimize my winter driving and do most of my daily commuting in the summer. would 4x4 be helpful when hauling my horse trailer (which I will be doing in the summer)? And what is the difference in fuel economy between S-Crews with the 5.4 L V8, if 1 has 2wd and the other has 4x4? I've gotten mixed results in my research so I figured I would ask the experts .

however I like the 4x2 mpgs round 25 on the hwy. I get 15-17hwy. When winter rolls around we pack sandbags and shovels. He swaps to winter tires, I rock the at's. I haven't needed to use sand/shovel just getting around town, but he does anytime we get a good snow. Not that it take hours for he to get out but still.
All n all for a DD I would go with a 4x2 and the appropriate gear.

I love my 4x4 but I get off pavement a lot. I just used it yesterday hauling stumps and brush off I got on a hill and couldn't back up cause a log was under my truck ( i was in a big brush pile it had been logged out recently) locked it in 4 low and climbed right over it all.

Get what you want and what you need, no point buying something you will regret. With that said, I personally didn't need it; as where I live has mild temperatures all year round and a urban area with no real place to go off-road (legally).

Another big thing is is you find a good deal on a 4x4, buy it and if in 1 year you decide to sell the truck, then you'll have a lot easier time selling it. 4x4's always sell easier.

This is all about preference and needs, I like my 2wd however, there have been instances I wish I had 4wd, like one time I got caught in a blizzard and talk about a 4 hour nerve racking ride, I truly wish I had 4wd at that particular moment, than again, I'm a automobile abuser, so if I had 4wd I'd make sure I use it and I will break it, my 2wd holds me back from doing a lot of stupid things...this is all due to a lack of self control.

Dodge+Ford = always ready
my f150 is 2wd and my 250 is 4wd. the 150 will go alot more places then the 4x4 250 can. thats just because the tires on the 150 are great and the 250s tires are crap.
point of the story or whatever. TIRES MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE. i drove the f150 for 4 years and never had any huge problems, foot of snow, mud, lose gravel. i only got stuck 2 times and for only a total of maybe 10 minutes. my 250 got stuck in a half inch of snow in 4x4 granted it was pretty slushy.
safe to say im buying new tires for the 250 here soon.

City slicker here and had 2 wheel drive trucks for the last 25 years. Snow, rain, towing boats and lunching them, some dirt road every once in awhile, but had never got stuck with it. The tires do make a difference and I usually spend over a grand on them when it's time to replace it.
4x4 is great when used wisely, but lot of people don't, especially during the winter. They tend to believe that the 4.4 is invincible, just to find out that they end up in the ditch with their 4x4 with cheap tires...

Tires make a big difference but i challenge any 2 wheel drive driver to take on some the of the sand spots out in the desert where i go out too.. I can't believe how many people get stuck out there in the super soft sand and have to be pulled out regardless of tires....
