Default 2wd vs 4x4?

I just recently got to thinking...do I really need a 4x4 truck? I've been looking at 4x4's but now I'm not sure if a 4x4 is the way to go or if a 2wd will suit my purposes just fine.

I live in a rural area where the roads do not always get plowed very well in the winter. That being said, I tend to minimize my winter driving and do most of my daily commuting in the summer. would 4x4 be helpful when hauling my horse trailer (which I will be doing in the summer)? And what is the difference in fuel economy between S-Crews with the 5.4 L V8, if 1 has 2wd and the other has 4x4? I've gotten mixed results in my research so I figured I would ask the experts .

This will no doubt turn into a heated debate, 4x4 vs 4x2 is a highly debated topic. lol That being said, I will always pick 4x4 over 4x2. IMO its better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. I know many guys that have 2wd's that wish they were 4x4's but I dont know anyone with a 4x4 that wishes it was a 4x2. Thats just my 2 pennys.

Somehow I figured it might end up in a big debate. I just want to make sure I'm being smart in my buying decision and get the most for my money, as well as saving money down the road in repairs, gas money, and whatnot.

4x4 all day bro. unless you live in nyc or are a straight city slicker that never sees dirt. but to each there own i know people that will argue till their blue in the face that 4x4 is a waste of money.

Well as a guy with a 2wd, and have had a 4X4...i'd say honestly unless you have a good bit of extra money to throw at it, a 4X4 isn't worth it. When i had a 4X4 for a year, I put it in 4 once. You can make a 2wd go anywhere an average person needs to go. And honestly...if your really gonna be ******* out your ride you don't want it for a DD. The biggest thing is...they get worse mileage, cost more to fix, and traditionally have more problems. I say that...right now my 2wd it sitting on jacks with the 2nd set of bearing problems lol. Anyway...if you come up on a good deal for a 4X4 by all means get it. But there's nothing wrong with 2wd's. I love mine, and it looks just as good as the 4X4 rigs.

As a 2wd owner this is what I've learned. Had my truck for a year now and taken it on road trips, trails to access a river, hunting area, favorite fishing spots, launched and loaded a boat from a ramp. I have never needed a four wheel drive truck for any of those. Some times a wish I had a 4x4 just for the 2.5 inch difference in the factory height, but I aint paying thousands of dollars for it. 4x4 looks cool and all but unless you really need something... eh you get the point.

By the way I have a 2010 5.4 2 wd and typically get 17 MPG city and 19 to 21 Mpg highway. If that helps any. Good luck on your decision man

Well where I live.. 4x4 is a status symbol.. Everybody has a 4x4 whether they need it or not, but being as I actually like to use it and as someone has previously said. I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it

I've had a 2wd and I would never go back to one again after having a 4wd
