2003 F150 4x4 issue
I have an 03 f150 heritage, 4.6 L automatic trans with 4 wheel floor shift. I recently purchased this truck at that time I put it in 4hi to confirm that it worked. A few weeks later we got our first snow and 4 wheel no longer worked. The low range indicator light illuminates during initial start up, but not the 4x4 light. I have the constant power and vacuum at the actuators on the fire wall but not the ground to engage them. I pulled the switch from the transfer case to inspect that it wasnt hanging up and it seemed ok. When I reinstalled it the initial start up 4x4 light illuminated.... ONCE. The local part store quoted me $90 for the switch. After seeing so many videos and posts about the GEM, I'd hate to spend money on a switch unnecessarily. Could the switch on the transfer case be failing even with the mechanical roller ball and spring performing correctly? I assume it could but it worked and then didnt... no acting funny before complete fail( atleast as far as I know) . How can the switch be tested? Thanks in advance.

It was the transfer case switch. Duralast part number sw4768. For 97 through 03 f150 and 04 heritage models with a floor shift, if your not getting a signal from the GEM to the vacuum solenoids for your 4x4, check the switch on the front of the transfer case on the drivers side. 7/8" wrench or deep well will get it out.
