Default Shifting problem in a 97 f150

Ok so about a month ago I started having shifting problems and after finding the problem was a vss on the rear axle I replaced it and it WORKED (so I thought). But a few days later I went out started her up hit the gas and noticed that I had no speedometer,I whipped into a parking lot and right back home. Now after triple checking O/D button, relays, fuses, and the vss I still have not gotten it to work.Does anyone know what else it could be?

Sounds like you're trying to get the speedometer to work? That's what your post says, but the title says shifting problems. Problems, got "it" to work, no speedometer, what could "it" be.

Whoooa.... too many darts in this dart board. Please help us understand your shifting problem in the title. All I see an explanation for is a speedo issue.

Yes I am having shifting problems(rough shifts to 2ed,and no 3ed/4th gear)which is why the speedo isn't working because it's told what to do by the vss which is still good along with the fuse and everything else, and everything is getting power but it's almost like it's not sure what to do because it will all work one day but shut the truck down for a day and everything stops working without even throwing a 1 code.

Have you rechecked your work to make sure it's not rebroken? It broke once, and you fixed it (apparently) once. Maybe you didn't fix the cause of the original break. And it broke again.

Does your O/D Off light (by the button) flash a code? That will be where the trans gives a code, not the check engine light.

Just for our benefit, what motor are we dealing with?

It's a 5.4l v8 4x4.My O/D switch is actually one from a different truck that wired in perfect and for a light we just drilled and put a little led in the dash that tells you when your in O/D or not and it has yet to start blinking almost as if it doesn't know anything is wrong.

BarebonesXL, I thought so too but after going through what seemed like miles of wires back to front the only thing I found was rust, rust, and more rust,oh and how many times I could get stuck in some messed up position lol

OK, so we are dealing with an E4OD, not 4R70W. Good to know.

I'm first inclined to say you've got a VSS sensor or circuit issue, still. Is the sensor a warranty item that you could take back and swap? Is it possilbe the said rust is on the sensor?

Yes I replaced the vss on the 27 and it started working again but then the o/d broke so it was replaced on the 30 and everything started working again and then yesterday morning it all was screwed up again with no noticeable causes or signs(no o/d blink,no blown fuse or relay)
