Default 2002 F150 FX4 Axle --

Hanging out here for awhile....
My 2002 F150 FX4 with 160k miles has a rear axle issue. Came home with oil dripping out -- between the driver's side axle tube and the center section. Put my floor jack beneath the center and raised it up.... yes, I can see the tube moving. I can even see the paint line where the tube was pressed into the center section.

So, what to do? I called a few shops around here and not getting any excited responses...

Anyone have this issues? Any input on the best course of action?

Thanks in advance.

I'm thinking you would be better off picking up a used unit. You would probably come out ahead rather than having yours pulled, dissasembled, axle tube pressed in, reassembled, and reinstalled.

car-part.com is a good place to look for local used parts

Thanks for the reply.... Strange, I have the 5.4, but the sticker shows Axle Code H9, 8.8" limited slip, 3.55 gears.

I thought all 5.4's got the 9.75"....?

All the H9 refers to is what is in the pumpkin, 3.55 limited slip, it does not denote whether you have the 8.8 or 9.75. You have a 9.75 unless someone changed it to an 8.8. I put an 8.8 behind a 5.4 on one of my last trucks because the bearings on my 9.75 are the axles and it is still living there years later.

Are you sure that's right? Others seem confident that the code tells ring gear size also.

Regardless, the 8.8 is very easy to tell from the 9.75. It's symmetrical, evenly shaped, almost round, while the 9.75 is uneven, side-to-side. Kind of distorted.

Or, even better, since you were under there - look at the tag on a cover bolt. It will say 8 8 or 9 75.

Besides all that, a decent off-road shop probably knows how to line things up and weld the tube in place.

Yep, I'm pretty sure. This one is easier to read.

That rear axle tag bare bones is talking about is the sure fire way to tell if you need it in writing but if the rear diff has 10 bolts it's the 8.8 and if it has 12 it's the 9.75.

I did clean off and read the tag on the diff....3 V919 A
L 55 9 75 1 M21

So thanks.... H9 is gearing. Here are a couple of photos

Tag .....

Break ... The result of hard driving, off road. No jumping, just washboard, sideways and small variations with pedal to the metal at 60-70mph

I thought the axle was just out of the diff.... but when I crawled under to phot the tag, I did a few photos of the axle and found that it was cracked! So, looks like a replacement axle is in order.

That's pretty rough man. I had a 94 with a 5.8 and got a lot of wheel spin then caught traction. It warped both axle tubes and sheared the yolk so a replacement was the only way I could go too.
