2002 F150 4.2l V6 2wd Rear Main Seal
Howdy all,
So my truck has about 220,000 miles or so and has developed an oil leak. Getting up under there, I'm suspecting the rear main seal. My neighbor, who tends to know about these things, also thinks it's the rear main seal.
I'm a pretty handy fellow, but feel like this job is out of my league so I called a reputable local shop who quoted $480 for the job. Does this seem reasonable to you? Some of the other threads I have read on this topic led me to believe this repair would be more than that.
I have also seen various recommendation on just adding some conditioner / seal additative to the oil or just adding oil (maybe a heavier oil) and living with the leak as long as it's not too bad.
Any advice? Are these gasket / seal conditioning additives any good? Are there particular brands I should use or stay away from? And what would be a good heavier oil? I'm in Atlanta if the outside temp matters for these things. It get HOT on our roads in the summer.
Thanks Ya'll
Chris

That's a fair price. They have to drop the tranny to get to it so most of the $$ is labor. Seal itself is probably only about $20.
Stop leak or heavier oil will not repair the leak. Replace the seal.
