2001 Supercrew engine replacement
Hi, new to the group. Want to replace my 245k miles, 2001 4.6l 2WD Supercrew engine. Any advice on companies for remanufactured engines if that’s the best way to go or are people doing junkyard engines successfully.
Also how much of a pain is it to put in a 5.4 in place of the 4.6, going to have a shop do it. Just came across a wrecked 2002 Supercrew 5.4 same color being parted out that I’m looking into. It’s a 4x4 and I’m assuming turning a 2WD truck into 4WD is a pain and not worth the time or money. Thanks and sorry if my questions are redundant.

I put AER 5.4 engine in 2016. 135,000 mi no problems . AER used to do Ford's remanufacturing, Fords own videos even showed AER patches on the employees in the videos. As well as provide engines for other oems.
They also manufacture Ford racing products engines.
It was the same engine I could have got from the dealer, but got it from local family-owned installation business for less. At the time the dealership parts counter would have sold me the engine for 3300 over the counter, that was with 20% off then. But I would have had to arrange to have it transported to another installer etc. My installer got it thru AER for about $2,800. Still came with motorcraft oil filter and thermostat installed and filled with oil.
