Default 97 5.4 having issues

Well, thanks in advance for any help here...

2 weeks ago, all the sudden it started running really rough. check engine light flashing and then steady on. pulled into advance. checked oil, a quart low. tranny fluid level good. hooked up the tester, and cylinder 2 misfire was what it said. so... went home. (it had been raining like crazy for days...) the next day, light was off. truck running like nothing had happened. later that day i was towing back my smoker and it was running a little rough every now and then, only with the smoker behind it (smoker/trailer might be 800lbs). Notice it during acceleration mostly.

today the battery light was blinking with bumps. then steady on. battery is 6 months maybe. the rest of it is at least 4 years old. terminals look good. belt looks good... but light still on...

my question is this? whats wrong with it?? ha!! could there be a common problem with the #2 cyl coil pack ( i got the 8 individuals, not the 4 packs) though would cause this? prolly not spark plug related. or could the alt. cause all this??

Fingers crossed that its something electrical and not bigger issue...

My truck ran rough during acceleration too and some times it ran fine until one day I could barely drive it which is right wen I took it to my dads friend/mechanic. it was my ignition coil that went out. Threw the same code as u had. I have a '01 5.4 hope this helps some

Default might help

have you checked the spark plugs at all because ive heard of water getting down and sitting around the top of the spark plugs causing miss fires and the engine in turn to run rough. you had just mentioned that it had rained very heavily and ive heard even when these trucks were brand new of guys buying them and a couple weeks later after washing the truck it would sound like garbage. My dads a master mechanic for ford and all they had to do was get a wet vac and suck the water out.

Am not going to bypass the alt as the cause, just don't like these engines and their COP. To many moisture issues that shouldn't exist in todays engines. Concentrate on the #5 issue first and go from there.

so just a dumb question.. on the v8 5.4.. whats the cyl pattern? i thought the haynes manual that i scanned thru said starting from the left side, 1-4 in order heading back to the dash and 5-8 same on the far side...? that don't make sense..

thought i'd ask before i start taking off COP's.. and what a PITA to get to the back 2 on each... thats why i stop buying import cars..hahaha

thanks again..

thanks..so what i remember seeing in the manual was right.. thats cool cause #2 aint so bad to get to.

took it to advance last night to have them check the batter/alt. battery was bad. bad cell they said. gave me a new one. didn't fix the issue. today on the way to work i noticed that <1500 rpm...no issue. as soon as it drops into 3rd or >1500, light bounces and then stays lit.

still thinking alt? voltage regulator? COP?

gonna pull the alt tomorrow morning and get it looked at.

I had the very same problem a couple of weeks ago. Took it to my mechanic and he hooked the computer to it and it said #2 coil was bad. Got a new one from Napa auto parts for $60 and truck runs ok. Plan on getting a tune up and replacing all 8 coils and plugs but for now its ok! I just dont know if the #2 coil is a common problem but check it out and let us know! Good luck
