1997 F150 4.2L - Engine Rebuild
Hello,
I decided to start a thread on my engine rebuild.
I already have some questions, and I'm sure there will be more :o)
Background:
Shortly after I bought the truck, a week after I did an oil change (5w-20) it developed a rod knock. The truck had around 140k miles. The cheap truck is not so cheap anymore.
After reading some pro and con on rebuild vs. replace I decided to take a look and see how it looks, than price it out.
During tear down I found all rod bearing in pretty bad shape, worn and particle damaged. The mains were also worn. I believe the oil had some hard particles tearing up the bearings. One rod bearing spun, breaking 1/2 inch part off the rod bearing.
Rod bearing #1
Rod bearing #2
Rod bearing #3, spun and broken
Unfortunately I have no idea what caused the damage ... might be some coked oil. I don't know what I can expect, but the engine internals showed some coked oil.

Make sure you label where all of the bolts came from as you tear it down. Will make your life easier when you go back together with it. Have you priced a chemical cleaning and magnaflux to make sure the block is still good? The 4.2's were known for running hot and popping. Something to keep in mind.

First question:
The main bearing cap studs are torque to yield, should be discarded and replaced according to shop manual.
I have problem sourcing it. Ford discontinued it (pretty nice from Ford to make TTY bolt than discontinue it), ARP doesn't seem to carry it - or I couldn't find it.
Any suggestions? I definitely would like to replace it.

I've had those one time torque bolts on a couple different cars. I hate them. You have to buy a new set every time you take them loose. Should have a replacement style bolt to use. I'll have to look and see if I can find anything.

When I rebuilt my 4.2 it had regular bolts. I just looked at the torque specs that I used and it had specs for both regular and torque to yield bolts. Maybe you could use regular bolts in place of the TTY bolts?

The ones I had removed are more like studs like this one

if you used bolts how did you mounted the oil pan baffle?

Yeah sorry mine looked a lot like that too. They were bolts for the main caps with studs on the end for the oil pan baffle.

I'm still on the quest for main bearing cap bolt - pn F65Z6345BA (ford made no less than 3 different main bearing cap bolt for the "same" engine - mind bogging).
If someone has a good tip how to source F65Z6345BA please let me know.
