Default 02 5.4L blew out plug, can I put it back in?

My wife called me, 02 5.4L engine blew a plug out on driver side. Currently it's in a parking lot across town. Can I take the coil pack off and screw the plug back in? Or am I gonna have to tow this thing?

nope gonna have to be tapped and a time cert put in. Unfortunately ford decided it was a good idea to only put a few threads in these motors so this is a common problem. If you are close to home you Can drive it but I wouldn't suggest more then a few miles. Happened to me about a year ago.

Its about 15+ miles in traffic to get it back to my house. Safe idea?

You can attempt to screw it back in. It's possible the threads are good enough to make it 15 miles.

Otherwise unplug the injector to that cylinder if you're going to drive it. Wouldn't be the end of the world. I'd recommend a tow. Often times insurance or credit card companies will cover a tow if you don't have AAA.

Timesert or any of the knock off threaded inserts are a good permanent fix. Timesert is $400 for the kit the generic ones are $100. No helicoil!

Where can I buy the kit to fix it? Also do i have to buy a special tool kit to tap and re-thread it, or does everything I need come in a kit. Wife wants me to take it to the Ford Dealer but from what I have read that costs $1500+ just to replace one head?

Delears can do it along with a Tune-up. Its typically 1.5 hrs of additional labor to fix a blow out.

I'm a tech at our local ford dealer, we charge an hour of labor (which is about $100) to fix it plus parts cost. This happened to my truck right as I pulled into my coworkers home shop. It took about 30 mins to fix including beer time.

Which plug was it?

You don't have to replace the head.

It was the plug for CYL 7. I pulled the coil pack off and it tore up the boot, the spring for the coil pack and bent the electrode on the plug itself. What a PITA to get to....who puts a fuel regulator right above the coil pack screw.

I tried to thread the plug back in and it would not even start. I called a local ford dealer, they want $700+ bucks to rethread it.

I have a mechanic buddy, he called a local parts store that has this:

http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...ad+repair+kits

Does this look like a legit kit? The timesert kit is $400+
