Default '01 Cold Start Issue

Took a video of what's going on when I tried to start (this first happened three weeks ago).

Bought this '01 in July, my first truck, 81K miles. It will start up and then die, ultimately getting to a point where it wont' fire. You'll hear it turning over. Did it three weeks ago and then no issue. Yesterday AM did it and this AM did it. All three were pretty cold mornings here in Wisconsin.

Now, I did find a sheet how to get it in to Dealer Test mode. Did that and funny thing is that it turned over and started. Turned it off, let the instrument cluster reset, and then it started up fine.

Thoughts on where my issue may lie?

Boy oh boy.

First I would check the connections for corrosion and tightness, but pos and negative. Follow them and check the other ends too.

Then I would get the battery checked (best would be if you can start it and drive to batteries plus or where ever). That isn't the typical issue of a battery on its way out but I suggest it because you say it happens when it's cold.

Thanks Tackle. Have been doing that, didn't see anything out of the ordinary. Has a newer Federated battery in it and it's testing OK.

You need to see if it is throwing any codes. If you don't have a code reader, go to an auto parts store. They will usually do it for free. It could be several things, MAF, IAC, TPS, etc...
