Flatlands. Lots of corn and beans--economy is rooted in agriculture. Pockets of civilization surrounded by farm fields. Good people. Probably lower crime rate than you are used to in SAT. Winters can be cold and snowy. Summers are hot and humid. Even though Springfield is the state capital, I think every city in Illinois lives in Chicago's shadow.

Yeah I'm from SE Iowa so I'm lookin to get back towards the midwest! The job requires me to live in Illinois, but I don't really want to go to Chicago area lol Springfield and Danville are just two of the places the guy mentioned

Might take a look at Champaign. Little bigger than Danville. College town, so there may be more entertainment. Look at Bloomington, too. Both have good freeway access to the rest of the state. Bloomington is home to State Farm Insurance which probably has a big impact on local economy. Danville seems to be in a decline since GM closed the foundry there.

If you like bigger cities Springfield,Bloomington,Champaign,Danville will all work. I'm more of a small town guy. There are plenty of them in that area also if you would prefer smaller communities. I live in a small town in west central Illinois. Just not a fan of the bigger cities. Now your from San Antonio so these won't be big to you. Just depends on what you like, to each his own. If you hunt (I assume you might since from Iowa) there is some pretty good deer hunting in Illinois. Good Luck with your job and move.
