Humm, maybe that is why there are regional forums here...to discuss regional things. The post topic was asking about life in Oregon and politics is germane to the discussion. If you don't like the topic or the post them move on...no one is forcing you to read it or comment if you think it is ridiculous.
When I visited Portland it seemed to be going the way of Colorado..too many damn potheads and libtrards.

Full service isn't what it used to be. I mostly do the windows, check the oil, etc. Every once in awhile I get surprised, though.

Oregon guy here: I'm from Mass but I've been in OR for 6 years now and I LOVE not pumping my own gas, took a few weeks to get used to but now it's awesome. It's branded as an EPA thing but really I think the main reason is it provides a ton of jobs to people without high school or post high school education. I personally think it's great, except when the weirdo gas pumpers get too chatty. I drove up to Washington a few months ago and sat at a gas pump for 5 minutes just stewing with anger that the gas attendant was taking so long before I realized I was in WA and had to pump my own gas hahaha

Sometimes they'll offer to do your windows, sometimes you have to ask, I prefer to do my own windows while my gas is pumping though.

My first Oregon fill-up, the attendant was at another rig and I didn't realize it was like New Jersey, so I had hopped out and started the pump. I was a bit surprised when he came over, put the nozzle away, and handed me my receipt, without saying anything about me starting the fill-up. I'm guessing he saw the Montana plates and decided he didn't give a damn.

Oregon is filling up with Caltards as property becomes unaffordable in most any city above 100K people. It's especially bad in the SF Bay area where rent for a 2 bedroom apartment is over $4K per month. I also heard, that recently, the cheapest house that could be found for sale was a 400 sq ft studio for $600K. An average house in city limits starts at about $1M and goes up.
Getting back to Orygun, I've been in central Oregon for 3 years now and I'm already able to afford 2 acres of property (paid in cash) and in less than 10 years (hopefully 5-6), I'll have a shop and house built, paid in cash. Try doing that anywhere near a city in Kaliforniastan.
Just like the Willamette Valley, it's an outdoors lovers paradise. Lakes, rivers, mountains and hiking trails a plenty. Plenty of off roading, fishing and hunting too.

My default answer to people about Oregon, It rains a lot, gets cold and snows... you wont like it there do not move there.
but as far pumping gas when its cold and rainy/snowy its awesome you stay in your warm vehicle or go get some snacks. If you don't like the person pumping you ask for for an odd amount like 16 dollars.

The Oregon ban on self serve dates to 1951, with the "official" purpose of preventing spills. New Jersey dates from 1949, with a similarly stated reason. There is also a story of a fellow going self serve back then who undercut the other stations, and the "no self serve" was meant to stifle that competition.
Once in a while there is a spill big enough to barbeque a couple folks, and that, shall we say, adds fuel to the fire to resist self serve in those states. Oregon recently changed the law, the details of which are readily available via a simple search.
A fellow I used to know who owned several stations had a spill catch fire once, back in the early '70s. Two dead at the scene, took the other two a couple days to die.
We have friends who live in Oregon. No sales tax and no income tax. Yet. They complain that property taxes are high. As with most of the states, you have your urban folks that you might could call libs, rural folks more conservative. Everyone likes to blame Californians. I moved here from Washington and would love to bail, but I married a CA girl, I'm in for the duration.
I like Eastern Oregon near Sisters. Mostly because it's a bit remote, pretty, and I've never spent a winter there.
Income tax....yes, since 1930 and from the "smartasset.com" website:
"Oregon has a progressive income tax that ranks among the highest in the nation. The average effective property tax rate is the 24th highest rate in the country. Oregon has no sales tax. "
Sorry for the error. Washington has no income tax. Thanks to Bigcat1185 for pointing out the error.
