I had my plugs done last month at around 100k miles... about 2hrs later, 3 broke and bill was around $460 or so. I was glad to have it done and over with finally and obviously truck runs better now.

I did not think at my miles that it would make much of a diffence but there is a huge difference on the highway

You make the dealer richer...lol.

As long as it's running well... IMHO leave it alone!

Why is this such a big problem? Why do the plugs break and does the whole bottom break off or what? I have an 08 5.4 with 52k miles, should I change them or leave them?

I see some prices here that are ridiculous. As I said earlier, I had mine changed a few weeks ago for about $245 at the dealer. Plugs & labor. They wanted to do the complete 100k mile service for $750-$800. Most of that was useless or I'd already done it myself. Told them to quote me just plugs and that was it. $245. If you pay a dealer 6 or 7 hundred for a spark plug change you deserve to get screwed. Don't let them confuse you with their "tune-up" or mileage service. Tell 'em u just want plugs changed.

When I had my 07 I did mine at around 80k km and did them my self. Was fortunate enough to not break any of them, got lucky I guess. They break for many reasons, tech not being diligent enough to remove them slowly and properly with this know problem, they style of the plug ( if you've seen them you'll know what I'm talking about) and ford not applying anti size compound to the plug when they were initially installed which causes the plug to more or less corrode and bond to the block making them extremely hard to get out with out breaking them. Very common issue which is why special tools were developed to get them out if they/ when they break. Luck of the draw really. I don't 100% trust that some dealers don't just say they broke them when they didn't as it is a known issue. I'd ask to see all the broken ones personally just for piece of mind.
