Default Wipers turn on randomly

I tried searching the forum but couldn't come up with anything. On my still fairly new-to-me 2008 FX2 the wipers will sometimes come on for one full cycle on start-up, at other times will wipe several cycles. I mess with the control and I'll eventually get it to stop. Then won't happen for days. The wiper control works fine when turned on. I figure I'll end up having to replace the wiper control eventually, but checking first.

Thanks.

Wiper switch is a good place to start... you might try getting some contact cleaner and cleaning out all the connectors for the wiper switch and motor. Sometimes there could be so crud or dried up dielectric grease causing an issue.

So . . . get this. I was going to clean the control out, but the step by step directions I found were for another generation. I found a non-OEM replacement module on Amazon for about $50, so I figured I'd install that and easily fix the problem. I replaced the unit without too much of a problem . . . and . . . I still have the same problem! The wipers still come on randomly, often just once wipe at startup, and then randomly after that. A couple of days ago they ran for a couple of minutes. When I would adjust the speed on the control, they would speed up or slow down with the controller until I turned them off--and they would keep going. Eventually, as always, they stopped.

How weird.

I think you're supposed to replace the wiper motor when that happens.

My 2019 Limited started experiencing this issue about a month ago. After finding several suggestions I decided to try this fix and it worked great. I purchased the new switch from Ford OEM Parts for $93 and it took less than 20 minutes to install. 3 small bolts under the steering column and a simple screwdriver to pry apart the plastic. Then 3 more Torx screws and the old part was in my hand (I had to remove the steering column adjustment switch too as these parts are somewhat clipped to each other). The random wiper "ghost" has disappeared. Upon inspection of the turn signal control part I could see that something had leaked out a bit... Great suggestion and an easy fix whether you go OEM or aftermarket.
