Picking up my 1st F-150 today.

For the price the used F-150s and Silverados were a better value in my opinion over the Toyotas. I like the interior, options, and overall look of the Ford vs. the Chevy, so I went with the F-150. I have driven Ford & Chevy trucks, but not Toyota trucks only Toyota cars.

I found my 2004 XLT Super Cab in New Mexico last fall. Had 59,000 miles and well cared for. No rust, few scratches. A great truck with all available options except Nav and Leather. Was worth the drive to go get it.

But I worry more about the drivetrain. More than the interior. Here's pics of both of my trucks.
beautiful trucks.
tranny issues? i didn't read about that in the stickies. what was wrong with it?

No locker but it does have a limited slip.
i found 2 so far that have the column shift, but i'd be happy with a xlt with a ECTED put in after ii bought it.

All full size half ton trucks. As you can see I didn't keep them long. I think I had a bit of an addiction to the new vehicle smell. Well its 2013 and I still have my 05. I can't quite explain it, but I just plain old like this damn truck. It drives good, runs great, looks practically new(I still get compliments, all these years later).
The most important part for me... is, it's never left me stranded. Which, no lie.. all three chevys did, even with having such low miles on them. Fuel pump, starter and something else, I forget now.
The alternator just went on mine two days ago and died as I pulled in my driveway,(close one). So again my ford got me home.
Just my 2 cents. Good luck with your choice.
that's good to hear, alternators are very easy to replace.

Used tacomas with high miles even sold for more than full sized trucks.

You get way more for the money buying full sized. More engine, towing and hauling capabilities. Once you put a leveling kit on a Tacoma and add bigger tires the gas mileage is no different than a full sized truck. In addition, the newer tacomas have weak frames that have been known to crack, bed is made of plastic composite and that 4.0 v6 pings when you don't use premium. I know this to be true, lots of my friends have tacomas. The tail gate is so weak and will bend after you put too much weight on it. Really to bad the quality went down, I was a major Toyota Tacoma fan.

I'll tell you I really love my truck and its fantastic but I was and am very impressed by my friends Titan.
yeah, the tacoma MPG isn't that impressive, especially compared to the power.

they are known for losing reverse and over drive. not even a week after having mine it lost reverse with. No warning or anything. Truck had a 147k on it.

I've driven every make of truck from the 90's to 2013s at work, and by far my favorite are always the fords. The fords are always running the best. From the tranny to the engine. Fords dont scare me to drive. Their interiors are definitely better, cloth, leather, layout, vinyl...etc And they look fine as hell too.

Also the Fx4s you can get anything from a xlt look to a lariat. I've seen more xlt looking fx4s though. Most have the column shifter as well.

These are my observations from working at a dealership.

This is the frist I've ever heard of the tranny issues also...

Thanks for the replies guys, last night i made my decision, i'm gonna get a 01-04 tacoma 4x4 DC, it doesn't have the towing capacity that i wanted, but it was more the size i wanted and as a college student i think a smaller truck will fit me better for now.

Dad said that i could borrow his truck when i need to tow, so that's covered to.
and of course heres a picture of the truck i'd like

I used to own a 04 DC TRD truck like that, same color to. Very reliable truck, only sold it because I needed more interior space. Look into getting Old Man Emu coil springs if you want a slight lift. I had on some leveling spacers and it rode like garbage especially going over bumps but the Man Emu setup was even better ride quality than stock.
