I have talked with alot of mechanics about it, and the consensus has been that it is because the year models 04-06 were made with recycled metal. Therefore the strength of the engines isnt as good, and they end up knocking when running. The cam phasers seem to wear out often too, and that definitely adds to the knocking.

Default been doing some research!

Ok, so I've been on this site before and its been really helpful (different S/N) and I haven't been on for a while now. But today I come here hoping to find some help, I'll start from the beginning. About three or four days ago (today is 10/07/11) I was walking to my truck coming out of work and I noticed the gas cap was open. My first thought was, 'did someone mess with my fuel? Na, stupid co-workers just messing with me', although it was still in the back of my mind I drove my truck and it was working fine. Now the problem begins. Last night I'm on my was back home from the gym, I start up my truck, check my phone and respond to some text messages. In that short amount of time the truck begins to sputter, RPM's begin to drop and black/white smoke starts to shoot out! This is where the fuel cap being open comes flying back into my head! My first thought was someone put sugar in my fuel tank then I thought 'someone must have added diesel to my fuel tank, and with my fuel almost being on empty I thought that it might be a definite possibility. I drive home and the truck is under powered, has a sluggish take off and a extremely bad throttle response! Codes start going off, 'Check Engine' and a little wrench appears; first time I've seen that one. I get home disconnect the battery leave it over night reconnect it and it does the same thing. Before I go to work I add a half tank of fuel and hope its still the 'diesel' in the fuel system. I get out of work go buy some 'Lucas Fuel Injector Cleaner' and fill up the other half of my tank with Chevron 91, drive home and still the same! I go to Pep Boys to get the codes off the OBD 2 and its a bunch of random codes that make no sense, ex. radiator fan was one. Unfortunately, the Ford dealer nearest to my job and home, now has the shop closed on the weekends. I'm desperate for answers or at least and idea of what's going on so I did some reading and from what I have read on the forums, by my understanding, I might have 'bad injectors' or 'bad phasers'. I made a short video just now, you can't see much at all because it's dark and I will record another one tomorrow, but if you could have a listen and tell me what you think it could be, it will really help me sleep tonight! I really do think it's a bad injector, at least I'm hoping; or which ever is cheapest

Look dude, lemme tell you something I'm a furnace/AC technician. People ask me all the time about their problems. On the street, at the bar, at a restaurant... I'll tell you the same as I tell them, unless im there, looking, listening and feeling it all I can do is guess.
It's the same with cars. Your knock might be a tick to me, and there's no sense throwing guesses and money around. Get it looked at by someone who can see it.

I have F150 5.4. 50,000 miles. Loud ticking noise after engine gets hot. Took it to the dealer and was told it was the cam phasers on drivers side. They charges me 700.00 to repair. Picked up my truck and drove it for 15 miles and it was just as loud as before. Took it back and they said it was the pass side. After talking to the Manager of the company, they agreed to repair free. No more noise. Do both sides to cure problem.

madeSICC,
I have what you describe on my 2005 F-150 5.4. It is not a tick, it truly sounds like a lifter tapping. I have read a couple of thousands posts trying to find that sure fire remedy to my problem. I have read people swapping out all kinds of parts only with the same results. I do have an appointment with the Ford dealer this Monday, and I will take some of this information with me so they don't take me as a complete idiot.

My truck starting running like **** just out of the blue. One key turn it was perfectly fine, then the next, the truck started running rough. I changed the VST solenoid (after reading hundreds of posts) thinking this was the sure fire fix, and the only thing it changed was to a very loud sounding tap! I put the old VST back in and still have the very loud tapping.

I changed out the spark plugs on the passenger side and no change. I pulled the electrical connector off the fuel injectors on the passenger side while running and the engine RPM's never even changed, had no affect! Pulled the drivers side and you can definitely tell a difference in RPM's!
