I have an 07 and mine does it.

I've had difficulty figuring out which it is. I've heard if its the phasers it will NOT do it when cold because they have a locking pin that locks them out until the engine oil gets up to temp, and if its the injectors it will do it all the time even when cold.

Mine it seems like it doesnt do it immediately when started but does it before the oil gets up to temp...i dunno but its under warranty so as soo as I get my little fender bender fixed in a week or so I'm gonna take it to the dealership and let them figure it out.

Phasers were fixed for the 06s.

My tick was ignition related, swaped the plugs and it went away. My tick was always there at low speeds and varied with rpms.

From the video, if I am understanding it right, the cam phaser will not make noise other than at idle? My 2004 seems to make a noise at 1000 to 1400 RPM. I notice it when coasting at around 25 MPH and I give it the slightest bit of gas. Anyone know what this might be? Dang thing also idles rough at about 600 RPM. Plugs have been changed and it has not throwning any codes. It is annoying however.

Ever since i installed my EVO EDGE i used a custom tune and decreased the timing to accomadate the lower octane fuel im using (87) to save money at the pump and the ticking went away but also so did the horsepower.

I have the same tick. NOT a phaser. I have tried many things to quiet them down, and really have had no good luck. Heavier oil does seem to make them quieter, but not much. And using heavier oil can have long term issues (I am told), the noise reduction is not worth the added potential risk IMO. Try adding a little Lucas to a normal change, I doubt that Lucas really helps much for it's original purpose, but it does seem to help quiet the tick.

lucas just makes your oil thicker so its pretty much the same thing as 5/30. try running a qt of Marvel Mystery Oil with your next oil change that will clean out your lash limiters and tensioner. i would use a 5/30 with the MMO because it drops the viscosity a grade.

but if your getting the noise off idle and in neutral it might be piston slap, in which case all you can do is run a heavier oil or rebuild it. i got some slap in mine, im just glad the rattles from the "lifters" and tensioner are gone.

my 04 idles rough at 600 too. i think its the coils, but something could be up with the TB because it takes along time to idle down after i rev it up in park.
the tick does sound like piston slap to me tho

I used a stethoscope to further isolate the source of the noise. From under the truck it is much louder than under the hood, and it's definitely coming from the FRONT of the motor somewhere. I only hear the "Diesel tick" from the fender wells and when standing back from the truck. If you look under the hood, you don't hear it, only when you are on the sides or in the fender wells. Anyone with any ideas please chime in.... It's not the phasers, I'm thinking a lash adjuster or valve BUT I am not sure. I can post a vid if it would help anyone?
