Truck sounds like a diesel
Lots of posts, and I appreciate them, but can or has anyone pinned it down? I have a '05 F150 5.4 that sounds like a diesel. A shop I took it to recently said I need a new engine, based on this noise. I had read the the 04,05 models had changes made to the oil intake valves. If that's the case, anyone have guesstimates on how much the repair is?
sorry to hear about that noise your trucks makin. First, before all, don't do anything hasty. Take your time, talk to several people, and don't do ANY major repairs until you dont have a choice. You gotta diagnose the noise. You need to be sure where its comin from, the "hit and miss" replacing parts to see if the problems goes away bit is TOO costly.
How does your truck run? Does the noise sound at start up, after warm up,under load, when you punch it, etc? Is it soft tick tick, or loud aggressive knock? Could be the cam phasers, the timing chains, the injectors, a cracked manifold or shot manifold tailpipe doughnut...
How about you post a video recording of your engine on start-up, and when hot, and move the camera close to where you hear the noise most? Maybe we can help diagnose, the shops are all "hit and miss" and yes, one of their favorite songs is "you engine is shot" or "it has severe internal engine damage" bla bla bla..
Here on the forum bro, we will fix that truck!
Later, Zeus

The ticking noise has always been very faint for mine up until recenty.. starting to hear the click through slight acceleration when I'm going through a neighborhood or basically below 30 mph. Anyone have a link that can help me distinguish if it is in fact my cam phaser? there was a video link at the beginning of this thread however it no longer works. (that was back in 09 I realize)

I have talked with alot of mechanics about it, and the consensus has been that it is because the year models 04-06 were made with recycled metal. Therefore the strength of the engines isnt as good, and they end up knocking when running. The cam phasers seem to wear out often too, and that definitely adds to the knocking.
KingRanchF150?????
"04-06 were made with recycled metal...." ...."and THAT explains the 5.4L tick!!!" Where the F*!@#$ did you hear THAT? You're looking for love in all the wrong places!!!1

My 05 5.4L did exactly this. I replaced the VCT solenoids and it cured it. I still have a little bit of ticking which I chauck up to cam phasers but it is hardly noticeable. Bumping up to 5W30 also helped quiet it some or maybe just fresh oil helped. All in all I dont mind the tick and if it never gets any louder or cause problems, I'm fine with it being there. For $100 and not having to tear into the engine I am pretty happy. Hope this helps someone. BTW vice grips really help to get those seals out!

Premium will not cause pinging or knocking, octane rating is the resistance to knock compared to cylnder pressure, the only reason this engine would knock is from advancing ignition timing too much no if ands or buts
