Default 'Whining' noise when let off the gas

I have driven older vehicles with manual transmissions for the past 10 years or so, so maybe this is a normal noise. When I am driving my 2004 fx4(above 40mph) and let my foot off the gas, I can here a 'beep' or 'whine' sound....hard to describe but only 1/4 second long, and sounds kind of like a horn beep at 1/100 the volume?? I have only had the truck for a couple weeks and I remember hearing it on the way home after buying it, but it is a very subtle noise so I thought it was wind from passing vehicles, until I realized I can produce the sound on demand by letting off the throttle. Doesn't happen below 40mph. Can anyone shed any light on this?

I've said it before and ill say it again. Us 04 guys get stuck with every rattle, whine, ping, and tick there is. My trucks always done this since I've had it. I have no clue what it is.

Sounds like gear whine to me. What part of the vehicle is it coming from?

Hard to say exactly....somewhere on the front of the truck, if that helps? It is quiet enough that if you have music playing at all, or if having a conversation with someone, you wouldn't even notice it.

Hmm.. the way you described it sounds exactly like a botched gear install job. If the backlash and all those setting are not just right you will hear a little whining noise on deceleration, usually at speeds around what you described and above.

Do you know what gears you currently are running?

If not, jack the truck up and mark the driveshaft with a line. Spin your rear wheel one full revolution and count how many times your driveshaft rotates. The number of driveshaft rotations is your rear end gear ratio.

Thanks for the various tips guys. I'm going to do the volume **** up mod first until I can spare some cash for the really loud exhaust mod.
