Question "Whining" Noise at High Speeds..Any clue what it could be?

Hey guys,

I was driving to Myrtle beach this weekend and I was on some nice, smooth, 2 lane highway and I noticed this faint "whining" noise that sounded like a hydraulic pump or something around 50mph. I never noticed it until 50 mph, and then the faster I went, the louder and more constant it would become. This is the first time I've noticed it, and it comes and goes.

I should also note, it does it with the cruise set or not, and it doesn't do it all the time. I even made it downshift thinking maybe the tranny, but it still made the same noise. It seems like its coming from the front right area of the truck.

My truck is a 2006 5.4L 4x4. Any ideas what it could be? It's really bugging me now..

Thanks in advance everyone!

Door seals? My SCab makes a similar noise at highway speeds from the seal between the front and rear door. My brothers doors are off a little and are insanely loud

I had a similar noise. Thought it was coming from the transmission. Turned out to be a bad idler pullley. Hope that helps.

I never thought of door seals.. I thought it may be a wheel bearing too, but wouldn't a wheel bearing make noise all the time and not come and go? I'll check all the pulleys next, but same goes there, wouldn't they make noise all the time?

No be pulley could be able to handle low speed and not be able to keep up with faster speeds the faster u go the faster that things spinning an if ur not careful it could lock up if that's what it is. I had one lock up but my tires were to loud I didn't hear it and it was bad

Thanks, Nathan. I'll look into that. I don't think its the door seals cause the noise is coming from up under the hood it seems. It definitely sounds like it could be a pulley, because like I said, the fast I go, the louder it gets, and it sounds mechanical, like a hydraulic pump whining..

Is there any way to check the pulleys without the truck running to tell if one is bad or not? I don't want to spend money just replacing pulleys that aren't bad if I don't have to lol

Do you run an aftermarket stereo? Alternator noise? I've ran into that with my aftermarket stereo stuff. Just need to seperate your DC power lines for your amps and RCA signal wires a little more.

I don't run any aftermarket stereo equipment. I'm going to look at the pulleys and maybe get my alternator tested.

How do you test pulleys to see if they're bad or not?

Mine does that and its caused by air passing between the driver's side mirror mount and the door frame. If i roll the windows down, and press in on the mirror mount plate, the sound goes away
