i bought the truck and over the first 1000k they went from silent to dieseling real bad, so i have no idea what was being used. and im not sure what it was attributed to. i did have them put in the heavy duty oil pump while they did the phasers though.

ive had the best luck with mobile one by setting an alert for amazon prices and can usually snag most flavors for right around $20 for the 5 qt. if im patient. cant beat that price to your door.

Walmart has the Motorcraft oil for $18 per jug. It's obviously the least expensive way to get a premium oil spec'd for these engines. Many many engines on the forums have gone a quarter million miles and beyond on the Motorcraft syn blend.

I've given up doing my own oil changes due to both the cost and availability of MC at local stores. I can pull my truck in, walk around and window shop for an hour, and walk out for $50. Not worth my hassle and mess at the house.

Hopefully you have better luck than me. Mobil 1 was $7 more per jug, and my 5.0L V8 hated it. It's the only time in 125,000 miles that I've ever seen this engine burn oil. I've seen others report the same findings somewhere on this forum. Mobil 1 is over rated, sort of like Lebron James, BFG tires, and Starbucks coffee.

I switched my 2003 5.4 over at 25,000 miles to Mobil 1 and it used a quart every 500 miles, went to Valvoline Full Synthetic and never used another drop.
Have you tried any of the Chain auto parts stores, they have it here for around $28 for 5 quarts, but I can get it all Wally World here.

hmm. $28 is still super high, but i dont mind giving valvoline full synthetic a whirl. i just dont want to use anything that isnt going to be an issue with my cam phasers. i meant to post this thread in the 04-08 forum. idk if a mod can move it for me.
