What years were staked U joints used?
Will be replacing the front U joint on my truck this weekend and figured I'd look up some procedures. Discovered that Ford stupidly put in staked U joints for some years, looks like the 2004's got them. I was wondering what years did Ford use the staked U joints, what years did they not used staked, and were they used more for 4x4's or were they used for 4x2's as well?

I believe they used them up through the 07 models. SKF has an aftermarket replacement that allows you to replace ujoints without having to replace the whole driveshaft now. Look up SKF UJ30488

I can gladly say that mine does not have staked U joints and it doesn't feel like my front U joint has any play, so I don't think I'll be replacing it. Looser than the U joint that goes into the differential, but that U joint is less than a year old, so no surprise.
So for the purposes of posterity, IMO, it does seem that the 04-08 2wd F150's didn't use staked U joints. Makes sense, they're not going off road often, if at all.
