The more I think about it, I lean your way . Very difficult to get all water out . So adding straight 3 gallons makes sense to me . I never tried to measure dump . Kudos to you for the info .
I use wal mart distilled for mix, I will use it for the flush instead then test after running . I will use about 10 gallons for flush at 90 cents/gallon or so that is cheap . I will go back to just topping off with straight antifreeze .

I only use about 5-6 gals of distilled water to flushing out the system, so you must have had a really dirty one. I buy mine at a place that sells it in 6-packs, so it's a bit cheaper than buying it individually. Any left over helps me top off my marine battery as needed.

Also, many green coolants have a fair to large amount of silicates in them. Silicates are very bad for water pump seals-its abrasive and makes them leak. So, you could experience water pump leakage/failures by using a coolant that has silicates. Most of the new coolants have no silicates in them for long water pump life.
