Default What should I look out for?

Hello everyone,Im new to this forum. I just recently purchased a 04 XLT superb, with the 4.6L 2V motor. It has 25k on it now. Was my neighbors, he got to old to drive and sold it to me. I have known this truck since new. I hear a lot about the Triton engines having problems, one is the spark plug removal, second is the spark plug blow out, third is the phaser? Don't really know what that is. The truck runs great! No problems, and I checked for any codes and there are none. Should I be looking out for something? Should I attempt to change the plugs? They only have 25k on them, but are 13 years old. Thanks Dave.

Nice truck!

You have nothing to worry about with the 4.6. The phaser issue and spark plug issue is limited to the 5.4 3v only.

The spark plug blowout was on the previous 97-03 generation.

If it were my truck, I'd do the plugs, fluids and serpentine belt. Again, don't worry, the plugs don't get stuck in these trucks. Use motorcraft parts.

Also drop the spare and inspect your fuel pump driver module. If it's still ok, space it off the frame.

Thank you gentlemen! That's a sigh of relief. Thought I was going to have to do battle with the plugs. I was planning on dropping the spare to clean and put air into it. What should I be looking for about this fuel pump driver module? What does it look like? What are the symptoms of it going bad? When you guys say change all the fluids, do you mean the tranny as well? I already did a air/oil filter and synthetic in it. Didn't bother with the tranny because it was nice and dry and clean under truck. And the fluid is nice and clear red on dip stick. Thanks again!

By the way, I'm planning on doing the leveling kit soon, and the ol'man when he first purchased the truck had flow master exhaust put on. Also would like to upgrade the radio at sometime, just the stock basic.

I'd do the coolant, the rear diff fluid and the tranny fluid since it's all 13 years old at this point.

The fuel pump driver module is about the size of a deck of cards. It's mounted to a cross member right above/behind the spare. It's aluminum and the frame is steel. Dissimilar metals cause the aluminum to corrode and eventually it gets holes in it and shorts out causingyhe truck not to start.

Unbolt it and check the backside. If heavily corroded, replace it. If not, space it off the frame.

Any "special" anti freeze to look for? Or any will do? I'll check that module and place rubber grommets between it and frame. Thanks

I'd use the motorcraft gold coolant.

Maybe use some steel washers on the FPDM. That would hold up better.

If you level the truck, measure before you do. Measure from the center of the wheel to the fender arch. That'll tell you what size you need. I wouldn't go over 2.5"

Do I need to purchase a tranny gasket or does my 04 have a reusable one? Do the reusable ones need any sealant or are they just rubber?
