The 3v 5.4 takes 7 quarts. There is a lot of info on this site and even more opinions. Most will say motorcraft filter and oil. I've run valvoline full synthetic and motorcraft filter for the last 20k. This last oil change I used a k&n oil filter which is a good quality filter and I also switched to 5w-30 a few oil changes back.

Motorcraft 5w-20 oil and a Motorcraft filter for me. Previous owner ran fram and quacker state filters for the first 73k miles and it had the bad 5.4 tick. I switched to the motorcraft filter and oil and now after a few oil changes I'm at 79k with barely a tick. I also changed the vct solenoids though too

I will only use motorcraft filters on Fords from now on, my jeep I used Mobil 1 but I can see myself in only Fords from now on

I run auto extra full synthetic 5W-20 oil and auto extra filter, on other fords I run mopar filters, makes no difference as long as you don't go for the china special. Your tick could have been from shotty maintenance or a manufacturing defect.

My truck use to sound like it knocked like a diesel when I got it..... From a Ford dealership. I switched to Valvoline Maxlife 10W-40 with 1 bottle of Lucas and a Fram TG filter this last oil change...... It's wisper quiet now.
