Default My 04 F150 Gamble.

First off if this should be in the build section please feel free to move. putting it here since its a repair type build.

Found this on Craigslist at an Auto recycler(junk yard) for $4250. whole or parts. Bad motor. went to look at it and its in pretty decent shape so ended up buying it for $4k. The guy at the yard said they couldnt get it running. The truck came into them with the right valve cover off and the followers removed from cylinders 3 and 4 laying in the back of the truck.

Here she is. Being delivered on a -13 degree day.

By this sticker here im assuming that the truck was a repo.

And here it is wedged into my garage. Not alot of room to work, but ya gotta make due with what you have.

Boy I bet the bank was pissed at the borrower for doing that to the truck when they repod it.

Best of luck in your quest to get her running again!

Any and all advice please post. This is the first mod motor Ive gotten into and i will be the first to admit Ive got a lot of leaning to do. Ive been reading tons of stuff on this site having to do with Phasers, followers, lash adjusters etc. etc. (this motor is nothing like my 77 460)

My first intensions were to buy a remaned motor and just swap engines but after reading about the 5.4 3v i want to see if there is life left in this motor.
The first thing i noticed the right timing chain guide is broken. Pieces laying down inside the timing cover. There are two lash adjusters are locked up on cylinder four. the motor turns over by hand fairly easy. By the way the head looks im guessing that the oil was not changed often.

No doubt. But then again it will just bring a lower sale price at auction and the bank will go after the debter for the differance.

Im thinking they tried to fix it and either gave up and stopped making payments, or were already behind and it got taken while they were beginning to fix it. really hard to tell.

remove front cover, both valve covers, replace all the lash adjusters, followers, chains, chain guides, and tensioners. If you're doing this yourself around $600. The phasers are probably okay although they may be noisy. If you replace phasers repairs will probably cost you another $400. If you have oil pressure you'll probably be ok. If you're noticing sludge in the engine I would go straight for a salvage yard engine. These engines are not all that great when you maintain them meticulously. If you neglect them forget about it.

Plans for now are adjusters, followers, timing kit, oil pump, phasers. Still have to find out if the valves are good and everything checks out that it would be worth it to fix.

drop the and check cam shaft thrust. If thrust bearing is shot there is no point in doing anything else.
