What to look for in '06 FX4
My buddy's looking at buying an F-150, and I thought I'd ask you guys for some help before he pulls the trigger.
Here are the details:
"06 FX4 5.4, Screw, 150,000 KMS, loaded except navi. First test drive the 4x4 didn't work, so they are fixing that hopefully today. I also asked if the plugs have been changed out yet. No answer yet. $13500"
What are the things to look for with this year and configuration.
Thanks in advance guys.

FWIW, I paid $1k less for almost the same truck (scab, not a screw though) with 105k miles in February. I think I may have just gotten really lucky though.

Scabs will always be cheaper than Screws. For 06' Screw with only around 93k miles $13,500 is not bad. My 07' Screw only cost me $10,500 but I got lucky. You can check all the front joints and the spark plug change always sounds daunting, but it just takes time and patience.

Is there anything in particular that should be watched out for? I think the price is pretty good but I'm sure he'll end up getting it for around $12k.

Since it is an Ontario truck I would suggest the following;
First off, find out what the 4x4 problem was...bad transfer cases are to be avoided at all costs. Could be major, could be as minor as a bad switch.
Check the front and rear differentials.
Check the condition of the brakes.
Check all of the lower door seams for rust. The way these are manufactured they can be costly to repair / replace. Hopefully the truck has been looked after.
If it has 150KM on the clock, the plugs have probably already been done and are not too far off from needing replacing again.
Drive the truck as you would daily. Also hit it hard out on the highway and make sure the shifts are crisp...this should have the old 4 speed auto and in my opinion they are pretty durable if not abused.
If you want to get really picky, have a look at the shocks / struts to see if they are original equipment or newer.
Obviously a good visual, texture and sniff test of all the fluids is mandatory.
There are a ton of great used trucks on the market in your area, I know cause I looked...lol, and there are a lot of abused trucks out there too. I would suggest if anything is giving you second thoughts, just walk away and find another to look at. I shopped for 3 months for mine and finally broke down and bought new as I could not find the exact configuration I wanted...I am very picky though.
Good luck!

Just listen for engine noise, such as noisy cam phasers. You can do some quick searches and find out all the info you could ever need on the cam phasers. Check for play in the ball joints and wheel bearings. Re-test the 4wd when its fixed. Check the trans fluid and make sure its not sticky. Just general stuff really.

Plug his vin number in there and it'll tell you every single thing you could want to know about the truck.
